Mexican Summer Soul

Dreaming of Summers past…

Locals call it Gringo Pass. Border patrol labels it Lukeville. A small cattle guard separating us and them in the Sonoran Desert. This is Sinaloa country. Ancient land of the Tohono O’odham nation. Home of Organ Pipe National forest. Site of Saguaro cactus, largest in the world. The destination is always the same, Puerto Peñasco. Take highway 8 from Sonoyta. Don’t forget a few green backs for the local fire department when they stop you. Consider it a donation or toll fee. Rocky Point is 45 minutes away. Once there, go south outside of town until the beach turns pure. Take the dirt road off highway 3 to Playa Encanto. The experience is mesmerizing. Blue topaz waves from the Sea of Cortez crash into sand. Shrimp boats at night on the horizon with flickering lights. Stars blanket the sky. All hang with Milky Way wonder. All seen with the naked eye. Light pollution does not exist here. Blinking airplanes and satellites trace over. Sleeping out and under isn’t unheard of. A cosmic trip to restore your soul.
